This 15-day Badimalika Rara Trek is not merely a walk in the mountains; it is a grand traverse into the spiritual and geographical heart of Far-West Nepal, a region that remains one of the last frontiers for authentic adventure. The journey is a tale of two magnificent destinations, beginning with a challenging and deeply sacred pilgrimage to the high-altitude temple of Badimalika. Here, you will follow ancient pilgrim trails, ascending through pristine alpine meadows and windswept passes to a place of immense religious significance. After soaking in the spiritual aura of the holy peaks, the expedition continues across remote ridges and valleys, culminating at the breathtaking sapphire jewel of Rara Lake, the largest and most pristine body of water in the Nepalese Himalayas. This trek is explicitly designed for the adventurous soul—the seasoned trekker who finds joy in solitude, is prepared for physical rigor, and seeks a profound connection with a land untouched by mass tourism.
The logistics of this journey are as epic as the landscapes themselves, demanding a true spirit of exploration. Your adventure will be a multi-modal experience, combining domestic flights, long-distance bus journeys on winding mountain roads, and thrilling rides in rugged 4×4 jeeps just to reach the trailheads. The trek itself is a mix of accommodation styles, transitioning from nights spent in tents under spectacular star-studded skies in the complete wilderness to the simple comforts of local lodges in small, remote towns. You will witness a dramatic shift in terrain, from the subtropical air of the lowlands to the crisp, thin air of high passes, walking through dense rhododendron and pine forests that give way to vast, empty patans (high-altitude meadows). This is a physically and mentally demanding undertaking, but for those willing to embrace the challenge, the reward is an unparalleled sense of accomplishment and an intimate glimpse into a side of Nepal that remains wild, pure, and truly unforgettable.

The trek begins with your arrival in Kathmandu. Our company representative will welcome you at the airport. Then you will be transferred to a 4-star hotel for your overnight stay.
After a fulfilling breakfast at the hotel, our tour expert will meet you in the hotel premises. Then you will go on the tour to visit the UNESCO world heritage sites in Kathmandu. You start by visiting Swayambhunath followed by Boudhanath. You will later observe the evening Aarati in Pashupatinath before heading back to the hotel for the overnight stay.
Your adventure begins with a journey to the Terai plains. A scenic but long 12-15 hour bus ride or a quick 75-minute flight takes you to Dhangadi, a bustling city in the lowlands. You'll spend the night here, feeling the warm, tropical air before your ascent into the mountains.
Another day of travel takes you from the plains into the hills of Achham. The 12-hour bus ride is a journey in itself, winding through dramatic landscapes. A 30-minute flight is also available a few times a week. You'll rest in Sanfebagar, the gateway to your trek.
The real adventure starts today. A rugged 5-7 hour jeep ride takes you deep into the hills to the stunning Ramaroshan area. The bumpy road is a small price to pay for the incredible scenery. Settle into a local hotel and breathe the crisp mountain air.
You'll spend the day exploring the Ramaroshan Lake complex. This enchanting area, with its interconnected lakes and lush meadows, is a sacred site and a haven for biodiversity. It's the perfect place to acclimatize and prepare for the days ahead.
Today, you leave the last vestiges of roads behind. The trail takes you through dense forests and small settlements, ascending steadily. Your first night of camping under a star-filled sky at Gatigadi Bhagwati is a truly magical experience.
The landscape transforms as you climb higher into alpine territory. The trek to Triveni Patan leads you through vast, rolling meadows (patans), offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. This holy site, where three rivers meet, is your base for the pilgrimage to Badimalika.
The pinnacle of your pilgrimage. An early start takes you up the steep trail to the Badimalika Temple. The effort is rewarded with a profound sense of spiritual fulfillment and jaw-dropping 360-degree views. After receiving blessings, you'll return to your camp at Triveni Patan for a well-deserved rest.
Leaving the holy site behind, you'll traverse across scenic ridges and valleys towards Deura Patan. This section of the Badimalika Rara Trek is wild and remote, offering complete solitude.
A six-hour trek brings you to Porakhe Lekh, where the trail meets a rugged road. From here, a short but exciting one-hour jeep ride descends to the town of Kolti in Bajura district, where you'll enjoy the comfort of a hotel.
A multi-modal day takes you closer to your final prize. A four-hour jeep ride along a dusty track brings you to Masana. From there, it's a five-hour trek through beautiful pine forests until suddenly, through the trees, you get your first glimpse of the mesmerizing Rara Lake.
To truly appreciate Rara's grandeur, you must see it from above. The hike to Murma Top (3,630m) is a rewarding one. From the summit, the entire lake unfolds beneath you like a giant sapphire jewel embedded in the green hills.
A full day dedicated to the Queen of Lakes. You can walk the 13-km perimeter path, take a boat ride on its crystal-clear waters, or simply sit by the shore and soak in the incredible tranquility. For more information on its unique ecosystem, you can read about the Rara National Park.
Your trek concludes with a short 2-hour walk to Salari, followed by a 30-minute drive to Talcha Airport. From here, you have options: fly to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu, or begin the overland journey. For those with extra time, a 3-hour drive to Jumla is a fantastic alternative.
If you opt for this route, spend a day exploring the fascinating administrative hub of the Karnali region. Jumla is famous for its delicious apples, unique temples, and as the historic starting point for many treks.
The final leg of your journey. Whether flying from Jumla or Nepalgunj, you'll arrive back in Kathmandu with memories of an adventure few have ever experienced.
This Badimalika Rara Trek is a testament to the wild, enduring spirit of Nepal. It is a journey that will test you, change you, and leave you with a story worth telling for a lifetime.
The 18 day trip comes to an end. Our company representative will drive you to the airport to connect you to your flight back home.
