Trip Overview

Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is one of Nepal’s most demanding and remote trekking routes, taking you around the massive and majestic Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m)—the world’s seventh highest peak. Unlike popular treks, this is an off-the-beaten-path adventure that sees far fewer trekkers each year, making it ideal for experienced and physically fit hikers looking for something truly wild. The terrain is rugged, with icy glaciers, rocky moraines, and snow-covered passes, and due to the lack of teahouse infrastructure, much of the trek is done through camping or mixed camping-teahouse style.

This trail connects the lush Myagdi and Kali Gandaki valleys, moving through culturally rich Magar and Gurung villages such as Muri, Chariban, and Salghari. As you climb higher, the scenery transforms into raw alpine wilderness, and you’ll cross through three iconic base camps—Italian, Dhaulagiri, and Japanese—used by climbers attempting to summit the peak. The trek’s ultimate high points are the French Pass (5,360m) and Dhampus Pass (5,234m), both of which demand good acclimatization and steady footing, especially on glacier crossings where ropes may be needed.

One of the most unforgettable sights on the route is the Dhaulagiri Icefall, tumbling from the northeast col between Tukuche Peak and the Dhaulagiri massif. From Dhaulagiri Base Camp, you’ll push through the remote Hidden Valley, a desolate and beautiful alpine basin that challenges even experienced trekkers, before making the final crossing over Dhampus Pass and descending to Marpha village in Mustang, reconnecting briefly with the Annapurna Circuit.

This trek is for serious adventurers. It’s not just about reaching a destination—it’s about enduring and embracing the full Himalayan wilderness experience. With the right preparation and the support of Him-Trail, the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek can become a once-in-a-lifetime achievement filled with raw landscapes, extreme challenges, and unmatched beauty.
