We leave Kathmandu early for an eight-hour drive through Charikot to Chetchet. It’s the kind of road where every bend feels like a postcard. From Chetchet, we hike two to three hours uphill into Simigaun, a Sherpa village tucked among waterfalls and terraced hills. On a clear day, the Rolwaling range shows itself before dinner.
Breakfast is done by 6:15, boots on by 6:45. The trail climbs most of the way, with a few level breaks and short drops. We stop for lunch in Surmuche, surrounded by forest thick with bird calls and, if we’re lucky, a few shy animals. Expect six to seven hours on your feet.
We follow the Rolwaling River, stopping at Thangding for lunch. The trees start thinning, the valley opens, and the mountains feel closer with each step. Beding, the biggest village in the valley, greets us after another six to seven hours. It’s one of those places you instantly want to linger in.
Three or four hours of walking today. The views get bigger—Mt. Gauri Shankar and Mt. Melungtse stand out sharp against the sky. We pass centuries-old monasteries and wide, open terrain before rolling into Na by midday. That leaves the afternoon free to explore or just let your body catch up to the altitude.
This is the big one. We start at 6:30, reach Tsho Rolpa—one of Nepal’s largest glacial lakes—then keep going on a rough, barely-marked trail to Dudh Kunda, a high-altitude lake that few trekkers ever see. The peaks here feel impossibly close. After soaking it all in, we retrace our steps to Na. Expect eight to nine hours total.
The valley drops away as we descend. There are still a few climbs to keep your legs honest, but it’s mostly down. Seven to eight hours later we stop in Dongang or Kyalche, depending on our pace.
A short climb in the morning, then a long, shaded descent to Simigaun. That’s six to seven hours if we stop there. If we push on to Chetchet, it sets us up for an easier ride to Kathmandu tomorrow.
From Simigaun it’s two hours down to Chetchet, just in time for the 7 am bus. From there, it’s about eight hours back to Kathmandu, where the trek ends and the city noise feels almost unreal.
